Text Box: New Dates & Places

CWBC will be holding summer meetings at different and we hope more fun and exciting places! The June meeting will be on Sunday, June 24 at the dog show at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, 694 NE 4th Ave, in Canby, OR. See page 6 for a map to the fairgrounds. We will meet at Gary & Carolyn Miller’s RV set up one half hour after the Beagles finish showing. We will post Beagle show and ring times on our club website (www.cwbeagles.com) by June 15. Bring a chair, and if you want to bring some tasty nibbles to share, that would be fine, too. Be prepared to pay for parking (usually $5 per car).

The July meeting will be at our 10th Annual Specialty Show on Friday, July 20 after the specialty potluck. The show will be at the Portland Expo Center. We’ll get as much information as we can in the July newsletter, and we’ll also post information on the club website by July 13 about show times and our ring number.

The August meeting will be our annual Picnic Potluck and Beagle Bash at Jean Applegate’s house. We will set the date for this event when we meet in June, but it will probably be the last Sunday of August which is when we traditionally have held it. Beagles are welcome and encouraged to attend to participate in Beagle games. The August Bugler will include times and directions.

We hope to see many of you at our summer meetings!

In an attempt to increase public participation in AKC, the AKC has announced new eligibility requirements for all-breed and specialty clubs to hold dog shows. These new requirements must be met in 2008 in order for a specialty club like CWBC to hold a show in 2009. A statement of the club’s compliance must be completed and returned to the AKC’s Event Operations before an application for a show in 2009 will be processed.

A communiqué from Robin L. Stansell gave the following reasoning for this new requirement:

“Specialty clubs are often the first resource for new exhibitors. Puppy buyers contact parent clubs for breeder referrals and rely on them for specific information about their breed. Specialty shows are usually more attractive to new exhibitors than all-breed shows because they are generally less confusing to the newcomer, offer more opportunities for the newcomer to meet possible mentors in their breed, and the smaller scale makes the sport less intimidating to the novice.  Because of the great influence the specialty clubs could have with new exhibitors in their breed, AKC believes these clubs also have a responsibility to meet eligibility requirements by holding public education opportunities within their territory.”

Requirements to Hold Future Dog Shows

Every show-giving club (group, all-breed, specialty) is required to conduct at least one of the Category A activities within the calendar year to be approved for the next year’s shows. Two activities are required if the club’s shows are held more than 10 miles from the club’s territory.

Parked Cars Unsafe for Pets & Children on Sunny Days

According to a July 2005 news release from Stanford University School of Medicine, even on a relatively cool day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly spike to life-threatening levels if the sun is out. Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine hope their findings will put to rest the misconception that a parked car can be a safe place for a child or pet in mild weather.

“There are cases of children dying on days as cool as 70 degrees Fahrenheit,” said lead author Catherine McLaren, MD, clinical instructor in emergency medicine. Though past research has documented the temperature spike inside a car on extremely hot days, this is the first time anyone has looked at cooler days, she added.

Researchers measured the temperature rise inside a parked car on sunny days with highs ranging from 72 to 96 degrees F. Their results, published in the July 2005 issue of the journal Pediatrics, showed that a car’s interior can heat up by an average of 40 degrees F within an hour, regardless of ambient temperature. Eighty percent of the temperature rise occurred within the first half-hour.

Cracked windows and shady parking spots do little to mitigate the danger. So, if you can’t take your dog or child with you when you leave the car, leave them safe at home.
