The Beagle Bugler

May 2007

Congratulations to Janet Armstrong and Gary Flightner, the latest recipients of President’s Circle Awards. At the April CWBC meeting, vice-president Ken Jorgenson announced the awards as follows:

JANET ARMSTRONG

At our club's last SPO field trial we ran short of judges and Janet very bravely stepped in to judge with David Church on Saturday for the 15" class. She learned real fast and with her new learned experience agreed to judge the next day with someone who had never before judged a field trial, her husband Gary. Because she is always a good sport and a great supporter of the club's endeavors, be it the beagle specialty or the field trials, she is very deserving of the President's Circle Award.

GARY FLIGHTNER

At the freezing January SPO field trial and the much milder February field trial, Gary helped keep us all warm with his great cooking, and if that wasn't enough, he filled in on Sunday at the February field trial to judge along with his wife Janet. Not having ever judged a field trial before, he didn't waver in his commitment to our club and stepped in and served where he could as he has done so many times before, and because of this, Gary is being presented with the President's Circle Award.

In addition to a certificate, Janet and Gary both received restaurant gift cards.

Sonny         by Jayne Bailey

Applegate’s Sonova Snoopy Bailey was born May 9, 1992 and joined me in July 1992. He was my first dog ever (at age 37) and I had many life lessons along the way. I met Mary Anderson in his puppy obedience class and that’s how I became a member of CWBC. Sonny went on to become a CGC and Delta Society certified therapy dog as I work as an Occupational therapist for the Vancouver School District. He was SO good with the kids, and they loved him so.

Fast forward to 2007, and Sonny is almost 15 years old. On March 7th following a vet visit where his blood was drawn because he hadn’t been eating well, I received the bad news: Sonny was in kidney failure. His BUN and creatine levels, as well as his phosphorus, were extremely high and he was put on an IV flush which temporarily helped his energy level and appetite.

Then on March 17th the Menu food recall came out and sure enough, Sonny had eaten some of the tainted canned dog food. I was mixing wet with dry to get him to eat. I immediately called his vet and said Sonny ate some of the tainted food and in fact I was the first person to contact the vet regarding this. Since then, he has over 125 calls. He said unfortunately there was no test that would prove that the food contributed to his condition. The vet gave me some antibiotics and some KD diet which Sonny wouldn’t even touch. So I called the vet and got the homemade kidney recipe which is basically ground meat, rice, egg and calcium carbonate. Initially, Sonny loved this and ate well, but after a few days, he turned his head to it. Then began the day to day question:  “What would he eat today?” One day he would love chicken and rice; the next day - NOPE. I finally bought some Nutrical paste to give to him on the days he wouldn’t eat. He has lost a lot of weight and muscle mass (particularly in rear hindquarters) and lies around a lot, but he still drinks water, pees and poops (firm stools) and loves to be outside sniffing where the bunnies have been. The vet said when he starts having diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, stops eating entirely, and has lost control of his bodily functions, it will be time to go to the Rainbow Bridge. Luckily, there are no signs of this yet.

Yes, he is an older dog and may have got kidney failure due to his age, but the tainted food precipitated his condition. I felt SO guilty that I had done this to him and cried many times, but the vet said I had no way of knowing and was doing what I felt best for him. He is still with me one month later, after his diagnosis. I am one of the lucky ones. But I know that soon I will have to lose my beloved Son.

April 13 -- Sonny was put to sleep today at 4:15 pm- very peaceful. He had got down to 26 lbs (4 lbs loss in 1 month) and wasn’t eating much. He had the yellow vomit and couldn’t get up from slippery surfaces (like hardwood floors) as he had no rear muscles in his legs and splayed his body. The vet said his heart and lungs were still ok, but quality of life wasn’t good, so I decided it was his time to go to the Rainbow Bridge. Thought you should add this to the article.
