Club Initiates New Beagle Referral Service
Carolyn Miller is the new Beagle Referral contact for the Columbia-Willamette Beagle Club. She will work closely with her husband, club webmaster Gary Miller, to create a web-based Beagle referral program while continuing the club’s practice of phone referrals. In addition to referring people to qualified club members with puppies, Carolyn will also take over coordinating the Re-Home program. Re-Home is for older puppy or adult Beagles who have been returned to their breeder, or retired from showing and/or breeding. At their special March 7 meeting, the CWBC Board appointed Carolyn to this position and voted to change the name from Breeder Referral to Beagle Referral.
To qualify for Beagle Referral, club members must submit to Carolyn a copy of their contract that specifies a spay/neuter requirement for pet Beagles. They must also have two other club members in good standing submit a written statement to Carolyn that they have visited the breeder’s home and/or kennel within the past year and are comfortable having CWBC refer prospective Beagle owners to them. Contracts and written statements of home visit and suitability for referral may be sent to Carolyn via e-mail or snail mail.
Once breeders have met the spay/neuter contract and home visit conditions, they may submit information to Carolyn about puppies and/or older Beagles looking for a home. If the breeder has a website, the puppy availability announcement will be linked to the breeder’s website. The Re-Home announcement will include a picture of the available Beagle as well as information about the Beagle’s health, temperament, size, etc. Litter and Re-Home announcements will be posted on the club’s website for a predetermined length of time, probably no more than 3 months, at which time they will be removed unless the breeder contacts Carolyn and asks that the web posting be extended
In addition to advertising on the club website, Carolyn is investigating advertising the Beagle Referral service on other websites. The club is also looking into placing an ad in the Breeder referral directory that is published and distributed annually to veterinarians in the club’s territory.

Canine Good Citizen Test
The following information is taken from the AKC website at www.akc.org
The CGC program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. It stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. At the heart of the program is the 10-step Canine Good Citizen Test. All dogs that pass the 10-step CGC test are eligible to receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. For tips on how to prepare for the CGC test items, check out the following website: http://www.akc.org/enewsletter/yourakc/2008/march/cgc10.cfm
The 10 items on the CGC test include:
· Accepting a friendly stranger – Your dog must allow the CGC evaluator to come up to you, shake your hand and greet you while ignoring the dog.
· Sitting politely for petting – demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to pet it while it is out with its handler.
· Appearance and grooming – demonstrates that the dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit someone, such as veterinarian or groomer, to do so.
· Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) – demonstrates that the handler is in control of the dog. Your dog must be under you control as you go for a walk on a loose leash.
· Walking through a crowd – demonstrates that your dog can move about politely in pedestrian traffic and is under control in public places.
· Sit and down on command and Staying in place – ensures that the dog has had training, will respond to the handler’s commands and will remain in position (sit or down) as commanded by the handler.
· Coming when called – demonstrates that the dog will come when called by the handler.
· Reaction to another dog – demonstrates that your dog can behave politely around other dogs.
· Reaction to distractions – demonstrates that the dog is confident at all times when faced with common distracting situations.
· Supervised Separation – ensures that the dog can be left with a trusted person, if necessary, and will maintain training and good manners.

AGILITY & RALLY OBEDIENCE NEWS FROM THE NORTH
Scout (Applegate’s JeanLouise RN, owners Sue Critchlow and Julie Reiman, breeder Jean Applegate) took 1st place out of 19 dogs with a score of 98 (Sue’s fault for taking a extra step!) in Rally NovB at the Portland show (Tualatin Kennel Club) in January, and 3rd place out of 20 dogs with a perfect score of 100 in Rally Nov B at the Seattle Kennel Club on March 9th. (Three dogs tied with a score of 100 and the tie is broken by the course time. Scout was fast, but a little 13” beagle just can’t compete with a GSD and Belgian sheepdog on time!). Sue who handles Scout, says, “I’m really proud of my 9-year-old beagle!”
Scout’s son Paddy (CH Tall Timbers Paddington Bear OA AXJ, owners and breeders Sue Critchlow and Julie Reiman) has been burning up the agility course since he finally learned to do the weave poles. Paddy got his Open Standard and Jumpers titles (OA and OAJ) at Elma on Dec 29-30, then got his Excellent A Jumpers title (AXJ) by qualifying in 3 out of 4 days at Puyallup in January and Elma in February, and then got his first 3 points towards his MACH (Master Agility Champion) with a qualifying run in Jumpers ExcB at the Seattle Kennel club. Only 747 points to go to get a MACH…and you all thought 15 points for a breed championship was hard.
His sister Bessie (Tall Timbers Sweet BessieLou OA AXJ NAP NJP RN, owners and breeders Sue Critchlow and Julie Reiman) also got her AXJ title and 1st place in Jumpers Exc A at Elma in February.
Congratulations, Sue and Julie, on having such accomplished Beagles!
