CLUB PLANS CGC TEST

CWBC is planning to host a Canine Good Citizen test, possibly in early June. Offering a Canine Good Citizen test is one way of meeting one of three requirements that will qualify CWBC to hold the annual specialty show in 2009. Club member and obedience instructor Pat Marlow has volunteered to administer the CGC test and is also willing to offer a day-long workshop on the CGC for CWBC members, possibly in May about a month before the actual test.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the CGC test. One person is needed to coordinate the event – take advanced appointments and organize the actual helpers at the event. Some people will be needed the actual day of the test to perform the activities that are required for the test such as being a crowd that the dog must walk through, opening an umbrella, making loud noises, etc. Information on the AKC website recommends 5 people are needed to administer the CGC test. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Claudia Anderson and let her know how you are interested in helping.

If you know of a cost-free or inexpensive facility we could use for the May workshop, please let Claudia know about that, too. We are thinking we need an open building that could accommodate up to 10 Beagles and their handlers. The ability to expand outside if weather permits would be a plus. Pat will be demonstrating the CGC exercises and then working with handlers as they practice the exercises.

Where should CWBC hold our speciality in 2010 and beyond?

The Specialty Venue Committee, consisting of chair Sherry Hinkel, and members Ellen Parr, Carolyn Miller, and Tracy Thun, gathered information on 8 possible venues for the CWBC Specialty show beginning in 2010. At their retreat on January 6, the CWBC Board narrowed the selection to 4 possible venues. The Board decided to allow several months for club members to discuss the possible venues, and then hold a vote on the future specialty venue at a meeting on Saturday, July 18 following the 2008 specialty at the Portland Expo Center on Friday, July 17. The Board believes this meeting date would provide an opportunity for the greatest number of members to vote on the 4 various venues. The 4 venues under consideration are:

· Linn County Fairgrounds, Albany, OR – Specialty to be held the second Friday of February (February 12 in 2010) prior to two all-breed Linn County Kennel Club shows.

· Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Canby, OR – Specialty to be held the fourth Friday of June (June 25 in 2010) prior to two all-breed Clackamas County Kennel Club shows.

· Portland Expo Center, Portland, OR – Specialty to be held the fourth Friday of July (July 23 in 2010) prior to two all-breed Portland Kennel Club shows.

· Clark County Fairgrounds, Ridgefield, WA – Specialty to be held the second Friday of December (December 10, 2010) prior to two all-breed Greater Clark County Kennel Club shows.

In narrowing the possible venues, the Board considered a number of factors, including:

· Date and time we could hold the specialty

· Whether or not we could have a potluck

· RV facilities including parking surface, hookups, showers

· Whether or not clubs would use our judge on Saturday and/or Sunday and therefore share expenses of the judge with CWBC

· Whether the all-breed club would charge us to use the venue

· Whether the show would be inside or outside

· Whether there were other specialty shows that collaborated to offer obedience and rally obedience

· Whether the host all-breed club  would use the photographer we preferred

In discussing what criteria should guide us in choosing a venue, Board members stated that they wanted the specialty show to be “classy,” and that they wanted it to attract the largest number of exhibitors as possible. In the next several months, we will be discussing pros and cons of the venue choices at meetings. We will also print in the Bugler more specific information about each of the possible venues, including member input on the desirability of each of the venues.

Marlows Receive AKC Gold & Silver Bred-by Medallions

Congratulations to Pat & Duck Marlow who are among the first to receive a prestigious new award from the AKC.

Pat was awarded a Gold and a Silver Bred-By Medallion.  Duck was awarded a Silver Bred-By Medallion.

In January the American Kennel Club introduced special medallions to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of exception breeders.  Breeder-Owner-Handlers of five or 10 different dogs that have become champions of record, who have already earned an original Bred-By Exhibitor Medallion through their participation in AKC Events will receive the distinguished award medallions.

According to AKC Vice President of Event Operations, Robin Stansell:

"These breeders and their devotion to and expertise about the sport of purebred dogs are invaluable to the AKC and our sport.  These breeders have bred great dogs and have shown the dogs they've bred.  The consistently meet high standards and set a fine example for other purebred dog fanciers to emulate."

Way to go Pat and Duck!
