Tualatin Kennel Club and Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon have invited CWBC to join them and other specialty clubs on June 13, 2009 for the annual AKC Canine Experience at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro, Oregon. The purpose of the AKC Canine Experience is to introduce the world of AKC dog shows to new exhibitors, giving them an opportunity to find out what dog shows are all about with first hand experience. Participation will satisfy one of the requirements for CWBC to hold a specialty next year.
The AKC Canine Experience will feature both an educational dog show and booths about each represented breed. The educational dog show is a fun match intended to teach people new to dog showing about the sport, and to give people practice showing their dogs. The “Meet the Breed” booths will provide educational material and hands-on experience to people interested in learning about the different breeds of dogs.
In past years, the event has also included handling classes, grooming demonstrations, a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, and other demonstrations of AKC events.
Vice-president Ken Jorgensen has volunteered to coordinate CWBC’s involvement if the club decides to participate. Ken will be looking for CWBC volunteers who will help the all-breed clubs set up and tear down the show ring, and set up and man the Beagle booth. At the Beagle booth we’ll need people who can talk to people about Beagles and point out their conformation characteristics.
This is an all-day event that begins about 8 a.m., so it will be helpful to have several shifts of assistants. Please talk to Ken about how you can help!

Pet Product Recalls
Education Chair Janet Armstrong received this warning from her vet at Dogwood Pet Hospital:
FDA RECALL of Peanut-Containing Products: Salmonella Typhimurium It's a good time to check your pantry! We recommend not feeding your pets any products containing peanut butter, unless you have information that the peanut butter ingredient did not come from the PCA plant in Georgia.
Visit www.fda.gov for information regarding salmonella contamination.FDA WARNING: Chicken Treats From China Canine and feline chicken treats labeled as “jerky, tenders, or strips” should be avoided. Since an estimated 99% of all chicken treats are exported from China, we urge extreme caution when selecting pet treats. Which treats are SAFE to feed our pets? We highly recommend and feed our OWN dogs IVD Natural Apple & Oat Treats, HILLS Prescription Diet Hypoallergenic Treats (for dogs with sensitivities), and Butler’s Lean Treats made with skinless chicken breast. Please do not hesitate to contact us with further questions about the safety of chicken treats.
Danger of Raw Bread Dough
Bread dough can be toxic to dogs. When ingested, an animal's body heat causes the dough to rise in the stomach. According to the ASPCA, alcohol is produced during the rising process as the dough expands. - from Dr. Jon @ Petplace.com
New Drug to Treat Vomiting in Dogs
The Food and Drug Administration said the drug, Cerenia, is the first to prevent and treat vomiting in dogs. When used in tablet form, the Pfizer Inc. drug can prevent vomiting associated with motion sickness, the FDA said. The agency also approved an injectable form of the drug, known generically as maropitant citrate, that it said can prevent and treat acute vomiting due to chemotherapy, parvovirus, kidney disease, pancreatitis and other causes. Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration and death in dogs, the FDA said. Both versions of the New York company's dog drug are available only by order of a veterinarian.
