Memorial Trophy Debuts in 2009

At the April 16 meeting, CWBC club members voted to offer a special trophy in memory of Sherry Hinkel beginning with this summer’s specialty show and continuing for the next ten years. Sherry loved the Veteran  Class so the memorial trophy will be awarded to the Best Veteran in Show. The trophy will be an original watercolor by British Columbia artist Beth Caskey. All of the paintings will have an older Beagle theme. Beth Caskey likes to work from photographs so we are looking for photos of older Beagles in interesting poses and settings. The photograph will inspire the painting; the painting will not be an exact replica of the photograph. CWBC members who have photos they would like to have Beth look at should e-mail their photos to Claudia Anderson at twainheart@ comcast.net. Beth intends to have at least one, perhaps two paintings ready for the July 2009 specialty. After that she will work on the remaining eight or nine paintings with the goal of all ten being completed in two to three years. Beth recently designed the logo for the National Beagle Club Specialty that CWBC is hosting in 2010

AKC Implements Mixed Breeds Program

AKC is implementing a new program for mixed breeds. According to an e-mail sent to CWBC, the new program will be implemented in several phases. In Phase 1, effective October 1st, 2009, mixed breed dog owners can list their dogs with the AKC's new mixed breed program. Dogs in the program will be issued an ID number. Dogs must be spayed or neutered. The fee for the program will be $35. Effective April 1st, 2010, mixed breed dogs listed with the AKC will be eligible to compete in companion events at standalone AKC Agility, Obedience, or Rally events. Mixed breeds cannot compete at All Breed Shows, Group Shows, or independent specialties like CWBC’s annual specialty show. The e-mail from the AKC stated, “Our goal in including mixed breeds in a specially designed system is to bring benefits to all those who share our passion for dogs and our sport. Companion clubs will see opportunities to increase entries, attract new members and educate more people. AKC will broaden its legislative influence by representing more dog owners and achieve greater exposure for our responsible dog ownership messaging. Ultimately, the positive developments that this program creates will benefit dogs the most, and this is what we value above all.” The e-mail invites people to contact mixedbreeds@akc.org with any questions regarding this new program.

BIZZY IZZY

By Sarah Richardson

Isabella or “Izzy” as she became known had quite a hectic start to life. She was purchased by a young couple from a pet store. Izzy lived in their basement because the family, a young, active couple, both worked and were not at home for 10 hours each day. So, shortly thereafter she ended up at the Oregon Humane Society. There she was adopted by another young family with good intentions; but again, Izzy was alone for 10-12 hours each day. This second family quickly learned they did not have time for a puppy. Both parents traveled for work and Izzy spent much of her time alone in the garage. Izzy came to foster care in February when she was about 7 months old. There she quickly earned the nickname “Bizzy Izzy”. Izzy was quite the charmer and made herself at home, often going to work with her foster mom. Her foster parents worked on training and broadening Izzy’s experiences in the world. Dog parks, hikes, and play time with other dogs helped reign in Izzy’s energy level. She was a typically affectionate and entertaining Beagle puppy. Soon Izzy started attracting interest from possible adopters who could give her a permanent loving home. In March Izzy went to visit one such family and never left. In her foster family the other dogs were not sure what to make of her. They tried but they really didn’t understand Beagle games. But, the moment the door opened at her new “forever” home, Izzy bee-lined for her new beagle brother Sam. It was love and play from the moment they saw each other. Literally they were wrestling before anyone could even say hello. When her foster mom returned to drop off her personal items Izzy was already cuddled next to her new family and asleep on the couch, tired from all the great beagle games she could finally play. As hard as it was for Izzy’s foster mom to let go, she could clearly see Izzy was truly home. Izzy’s new mom Angi reported weeks later that she had never seen Sam so happy. Izzy even made friends with all the cats, falling asleep with them on various beds at night. One sweet story about Izzy’s adjustment included the fact that in her first few weeks in her new home no matter how tired she was she would not go to bed unless Sam was accompanying her. With all the change she had experienced she didn’t want to lose her new buddy. Izzy has brought new joy to her forever family and an extra dose of “beagleness” to Sam’s life as well.
