AKC Approves 2010 NBC Specialty

In a letter dated March 3, 2010, the American Kennel Club officially approved the National Beagle Club parent specialty event to be held at the Red Lion at the Quay in Vancouver October 6-8.

The AKC had previously approved the Columbia-Willamette Beagle Club Specialty at the same venue on October 5 & 6. The NBC 2010 Show Committee, many of whom are also CWBC members, have been working on the specialty for about 18 months now. Following are some of the highlights of what we have planned so far:

The first event of the National Specialty will be the tracking test early Sunday morning, October 4 at Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park in Vancouver, WA. Judges have been secured for this event which will offer an opportunity for both TD and TDX titles.

CWBC Show Chair Janet Armstrong has judges contracts in hand for obedience, rally obedience, and juniors on Monday morning, sweeps later on Monday, and regular conformation classes starting late Monday and finishing on Tuesday.

Tuesday will be a jam-packed day. In addition to CWBC events, the NBC Agility trials will be at Delta Park in Portland, OR on Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday evening will see the popular “Top Twenty” event, showcasing the Beagles that have the highest number of show wins in the previous year.

Wednesday will open with NBC obedience and rally obedience. Puppy and veterans sweeps will follow. Depending on entries, we may start regular classes late on Wednesday afternoon. In the evening, CWBC’s judge, Dr. Catharina Linde-Forsberg from Sweden, a world-renowned expert in canine reproduction, will present the Breeders Seminar.

Thursday and Friday will feature regular conformation classes culminating in the selection of the National Best of Breed on Friday afternoon. Thursday evening the Beagle Rescue Foundation of America will host their annual auction. Friday night, the specialty will conclude with a banquet.

Over the entire week will be special events including the CWBC silent auction, the NBC raffle and state baskets, the NBC photo contest, and canine health clinics. The hospitality room will be open for breakfast and lunch food. Vendors will have booths offering a variety of products.

It will be an exciting week celebrating everything Beagle and we hope all CWBC members will get involved in making it a huge success.

AKC OFFERS GRAND NEW TITLE
by Ellen Parr

So what do you do when you have a nice show dog and you’ve achieved his (or her) Championship? You don’t have the time or the money to special him, but you’d like to keep showing him? Starting in May, 2010, the AKC is offering a new title, “Grand Champion”, that could be fun for you and your dog. Pertinent facts:

● This title is only available to dogs who have already earned their championship title.

● Your dog must earn 25 points with 3 majors. The point schedule will be the same as the Championship point schedule. (However, the point schedule will not be impacted by Grand Championships.)

● The judge may, AT HIS/HER DISCRETION, award Grand Championship points to one or all of the following dogs: BOB, BOS, and the new designations, Select Dog and Select Bitch. If Grand Championship points are not awarded to BOB, no other dogs will earn Grand Championship points that day.

● If a class dog or bitch wins BOB or BOS, he/she will NOT be awarded Grand Championship points. This title is only open to Champions of Record and points cannot be gathered prior to earning that title.

Points will be calculated as follows:

Best of Breed – All dogs of the both sexes in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted.

Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed - All dogs of the same sex in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted.

Select Dog or Select Bitch – One dog less that the number of dogs of the same sex in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted.

Champions of Record including champions that are non-regular class winners or dogs that have been “moved up” to Best of Breed competition for the show are the only dogs eligible for Grand Championship points.

Although class dogs can win BOB or BOS, they have not yet obtained their CH title and are not eligible for Grand Champion competition. (Dogs entered in non-regular classes are not counted in the computation of Championship or Grand Championship points.)
