Little Melissa
Melissa came to CWBC Rescue after her owner of 12 years was injured and sent to a nursing home. Melissa was not well cared for by her extended family and was left tethered outside with little food or water and no shelter. Finally, a kind neighbor took pity on her and called the animal control authorities. Melissa was taken into rescue.
“Mel”, as she became known, is a very sweet little girl with personality plus. However, her age of 12+ years didn’t make her very attractive to most adoptive families. But that didn’t bother Ken and Carole. In fact, that made her even more attractive. Ken and Carole have rescued dogs all of their married lives and knew what great pets they make. After reading Mel’s story, Ken and Carole filled out an application and made plans to meet her. Well, let me tell you, it was love at first sight. Mel immediately took to Ken and Carole’s beautiful home. She sniffed and sniffed until she very quickly found the cat’s food! Then the hunt for more food or a discarded kibble was on! Mel met the family dog and cat. No problems. Tails wagged and everyone got along beautifully. Next, Mel went into Ken and Carole’s wonderful backyard, which frankly, should be on the cover of Home and Garden! This was heaven for Mel.
And so it was decided that Mel had at last found her “forever family” with Ken and Carole. We know she will be very, very happy. Three big beagle slurps for Ken and Carole!
Rags to Riches; Buddy becomes a King
“Buddy”, as he became known, was found running down a remote country road, frightened and alone. All attempts were made find Buddy’s family but no one came forward to claim him. It was possible that poor Buddy had been “dumped”.
Buddy, being such a sweet and handsome boy didn’t have long to wait until a wonderful family spotted him on the internet and came to meet him. Eric and Janice Richards have three daughters but they came without them, “just to meet Buddy” and to think about adoption. Not to adopt him. Well, Buddy had other plans. He immediately took to Eric as if they had been life long pals. Buddy was all smiles and wags. Eric and Janice decided right then and there that Buddy was the dog they wanted to add to their family. They adopted Buddy and took him home. Their daughters, Sydney, Mackenzie, and Haley (pictured) were delighted and began to spoil Buddy right away. First, they re-named him “King Louis” making him the royal dog of the family.
Now Louis goes for a 5 miles walk with Eric every day and loves it. Eric says that he looks forward to coming home after a long day at work to be greeted by Louis happy face and wagging tail. Janice is lucky that she can take Louis to work with her where he is now the official “office dog”. Even the nearby businesses have adopted Louis and keep treats handy just in case Louis comes for a visit. Louis also loves his girls and loves being spoiled by them. King Louis has a complete wardrobe of doggie sweaters for all occasions, harnesses and a variety of toys at his disposal. After all, aren’t all Kings entitled to being spoiled?
Moose and Ginger are two of the famous “Tabitha’s Puppies”. Ginger and Moose were rescued along with their mommy, Tabitha and their litter mates when they were just hours old. Their wonderful foster family gave them a great home and a good start in life. But, they had to wait to be adopted until all was settled and they were free to be adopted.
Ginger and Moose met the Whitney family when they were just shy of their 6 month birthday. Laura had promised her daughter Cami a dog for her birthday in August. Laura was searching the web and saw Ginger and Moose. She knew right away that one of those dogs just had to be part of their family. But which one? So, without telling Cami, the family loaded into the car for a trip to “buy some trees”. It was a long drive and Cami began to wonder if her mom would ever find the tree nursery she was looking for!
Finally, Laura told Cami that they had come to meet puppies and see if one of them might fit into their family. At once, Cami ran to Moose and said, “I love him”. Cami’s sister, Summer was taken with Ginger. Ginger also took to Summer right away. In fact, they all seemed get along very well from the start. Laura said she could not separate brother and sister and it was decided that Moose and Cami, Ginger and Summer would adopt each other. The girls were so happy to finally have their puppies to raise and play with and be best friends.
Moose and Ginger will always have each other with their “forever family”, the Whitneys. Big, happy tail wags to the Whitney family for choosing to rescue two puppies in need of a good and loving home.
Beautiful Bella
Bella was born under unhappy circumstances. Her mommy, Tabitha had fallen into a bad situation and was forced to live inside a small house locked in the dining room area with approximately 20 other dogs. You can imagine the conditions. The dogs were “free fed” so only the fastest and the strongest, most aggressive dogs got to eat. The others were starving.
Tabitha was one of the unfortunate ones who didn’t get much to eat. She was pregnant but somehow managed to survive. When Tabitha was discovered, she had just given birth to 5 of the most adorable beagle/border collie mix puppies. Tabitha was a trooper and was doing her best to care for her new born pups. Fortunately, Tabitha, Bella and her brother and sisters were rescued the day they were born by Sarah and Brian.
Bella and her brother and sisters went to a wonderful home where they were save, warm and well fed. Their foster mom Sarah, and foster dad, Brian took them in and nurtured them and Tabitha so that they would have a good chance for life. Tabitha grew stronger and so did her puppies. They were soon jumping and running and being normal happy little pups. Being as Tabitha was underfed, Bella along with her siblings developed Demodectic Mange, but that was easily taken care of once the right treatment was discovered.
Bella turned into a beautiful black and white “mini” Border Collie mix. She has her mother’s sweet disposition, gentle ways and sweet, sweet eyes. Sarah and Brian loved Tabitha and all the puppies but knew they could not keep so many dogs! After all, Sarah and Brian already have a St. Bernard named Bruno.
After a lot of thought, Sarah and Brian decided that they would never again, have the opportunity to raise a puppy from birth, then give it a home for life; But which one to keep? They chose Bella as she seemed to need them the most. They knew they could not bear to part with her.
Bella now has her “forever home” with Sarah and Brian, her two rescuers. They know that Ginger and Moose will soon find their “forever homes” as well, but they are welcome to stay just as long as they need to.
After a suitable amount of time has passed, Sarah and Brian someday hope to reunite the pups and Tabitha for a play day at a doggie park. All the happy families can visit while the pups and Tabitha meet again.
Sarah and Brian are real heroes. No, they can’t sink a half court shot, or dash down the field for that last minute touchdown. They aren’t on magazine covers and they don’t have those multi-million dollar salaries. No, they have a much greater gift than that. They have the ability and courage to open their hearts to those who are the most helpless in our society; the weakest who can’t even speak for themselves. And they did it all for nothing more than they knew it was the right thing to do. In our book, that is a true hero.
Lily (aka Houdini)

A very happy ending for Houdini. This beautiful tri-color Beagle/Border Collie mix has found her forever home with Steve and Chelsea. She has been in foster care since she was hours old. Her mother was a stray who gave birth under difficult circumstances. She was raised with her mother Tabitha and littermates in foster care. Along with her littermates she developed demodectic mites or mange as it is better known. A wonderful vet named Angie recommended the perfect treatment and Houdini blossomed into a beautiful young lady.
Her foster family named her Houdini because it seemed there was no night time enclosure that could contain her. She charmed them with her desire to be near them, and the effort she would go to, to make her way back to their laps. She even figured out how to open the kennel door at Columbia Willamette Beagle Rescue. Then it was discovered that she could extract a squeaky from any toy in a matter of seconds.
Houdini grew into a beautiful blend of a Beagle/Border Collie with lots of energy and Tabitha’s loving personality. Steve and Chelsea were looking for a Beagle and found Columbia Willamette Beagle Rescue. After talking with Judy about their lifestyle everyone agreed that one of these “honorary Beagles” would make a perfect addition to their family.
Steve came to CWBC Rescue to meet the puppies. He had a hard time deciding which one to bring home. Houdini made it very clear she was the one when she crawled into his lap and fell asleep. Houdini’s foster mom was so comforted seeing how relaxed and happy she was with Steve. When they loaded her in her very own crate for the ride to her new home she laid down right away as if she had belonged there all along.
Steve and Chelsea report she loves playing with children and is settling into her new home and family very well. We can tell they will give her the most wonderful life as they took great care in
making the decision to adopt a puppy, and are so concerned about her well being. She looks forward to camping and hiking with her new family and will be off to formal school soon. She will certainly excel at obedience as she is as smart as they come.
Houdini’s foster family wishes to thank Columbia Willamette Beagle Club and Rescue for making her an honorary “Beagle” and with open arms agreeing to help find her a home. They are also very grateful to them for inviting her to come and stay while they were out of town. It was such a great opportunity for the puppies to explore the world and gain confidence. It was like puppy camp and certainly puppy nirvana. The support we have received from the rescue has made all the difference for Houdini.
Sarah, Foster Mom
This is the wonderful story of Arthur. Arthur is a beautiful tri-color male beagle who moved to Oregon from California with his family. In California, Arthur had a spacious home with a doggie door and plenty to do. However, Arthur is a bit of a “couch potato” so he really just wanted to be in the house with his family. When the family moved to Oregon and into an apartment, that was ok, but not when the family had to go off to work. You see, Arthur just hates to be left alone. Arthur would bark and howl and tear apart his bedding in frustration. Arthur was very unhappy. In addition, Arthur’s humans had a new grandchild. This was wonderful news but not to Arthur. Small children made Arthur nervous and he began to growl at the baby. They could also see that Arthur was not going to be happy when the baby started to crawl and toddle. Arthur’s family loved him so much but they could see that he needed a home where he could be with his humans all the time and where there were no small children.
Arthur’s family called CWBC Rescue and left a message saying they had made the agonizing decision to surrender Arthur in hopes that a new and more appropriate home could be found. There were a lot of tears and sad good-byes as Arthur’s mom left him in foster care. She brought his blanket and his two beds (we told you, Arthur is a couch potato), his bowls and his leash. She wanted to be sure Arthur had all the things with him that would help him to feel at home.
Surprisingly, the very next message was from a wonderful lady who was helping her neighbor, Audrie to find a beagle to adopt and love. She explained that Audrie had lost her long time beagle, Goldie, about a year ago and was so lonely without him. Since a year had passed, Audrie decided it was time for a new beagle. Audrie is 85-years young and she made it clear that she wanted a beagle that would be her companion that she could cuddle and spoil. Audrie explained that she does not like to leave the house very much so she would be with the dog all the time. And when she does go out, Arthur would come with her.
This was Arthur’s lucky day! Arthur and Audrie hit it off right away. Of course, it helped that Audrie had a few treats to share! As they were playing and getting acquainted, Audrie said, “You know, Arthur was my father’s name.” About that time, we realized that Arthur had fallen asleep on Audrie’s feet! As they say, that was that. Arthur had found his new home. And what a home it is! Five beautiful fenced acres and a lovely smaller fenced yard right outside the backdoor.
Arthur made himself right at home. He jumped onto his beds and snuggled up to Audrie’s side. Audrie asked, “Do you think he would like to sleep on the bed?” Boy, just try to stop him!
So, a very Happy Tale for a very special lady and her special Arthur.
Tabitha, Phreddie and Missy Makes Three!
Tabitha has, at last, found her forever home! Cheryl Dumolt and Lorraine Stratton were searching the internet one day, looking for a “bother or sister” for their beagle, Phreddie. Phreddie was rescued by Cheryl and Lorraine from a bad situation. Phreddie’s former owner just wasn’t interested. Phreddie was left tied outside while the family’s black Labrador Retriever was in the house and lavished with attention. Cheryl and Lorraine responded to a plea from someone who knew of Phreddie’s bad situation and took him home immediately. Phreddie loved his new home complete with a 2 acre backyard and all the toys that could possibly fit in the house. There were even a couple of cats to make friends with! But, Cheryl and Lorraine thought that Phreddie would be happiest if he had a little brother or sister to keep him company while they were at work.
Cheryl and Lorraine found CWBC Rescue and saw the story of Tabitha’s pups. Phreddie is only about a year old so they thought a puppy might just be what Phreddie was missing. So, Cheryl and Lorraine filled out the application and made an appointment to meet the puppies. They brought Phreddie along to see which pup Phreddie might choose.
Well, Phreddie, being a very cool beagle, got right into doing the “beagle thing”. Phreddie and the pups, plus Tabitha had a ball. They played and romped and practically destroyed the foster family’s Christmas tree! After a few hours, it was clear. Phreddie had chosen the puppy named “Minnie, AND Tabitha! Tabitha and Phreddie were sole mates from the start. They played “beagle” together and even taught the foster family’s St. Bernard dog how to “aroooo”! But, they had a tough choice. Minnie was right in there doing the beagle thing too!
Being the kindest and best of people, Cheryl and Lorraine decided that the three dogs simply had to stay together. There just wasn’t any question about it.
There were many tears as Sarah, the foster mom, had to say good-bye. Sarah had nursed Tabitha and her puppies back to health after their abused past and had come to love them so much. But, she knew that Tabitha and Minnie had found their “forever home” Cheryl and Lorraine obviously loved Minnie, Tabitha and Phreddie and would make the best home for them and that was the most important thing. So, off they went to their new home.
Tabitha and Minnie, (now Missy) have made “friends” with the cats. Phreddie is of course so happy to have two sisters to “beagle” with and Cheryl and Lorraine have fun lavishing love and affection on their wonderful family. Cheryl and Lorraine thought that Minnie was getting into so much trouble; they decided to name her “Mischief” but shortened it to “Missy”.
The dogs spend their day romping and playing and conspiring about what kind of mischief they can get into next.
What a Happy Tale!
Sisters forever! Hope and Niki grew up together in a wonderful home in rural Oregon. A tragic illness forced their family to surrender Hope and Niki for adoption. They had no choice. They knew it was a long shot that Hope and Niki could find a new home together.
Enter Nino and Patricia. Two of the nicest “California transplants” you’d ever want to meet. This delightful couple contacted CWBC Rescue looking for two dogs. But, not only were they looking for just two dogs, they were hoping for two females dogs. And, not only just two female dogs, they were looking for two female adult dogs. And not only were they looking for two female adult dogs, they were hoping to find two female adult dogs that had been raised together!!! Hope and Niki fit their what they were looking for perfectly. But, the big question was, would this be a good fit?
Nino and Patricia visited Hope and Niki one Saturday afternoon and spent over an hour playing and getting to know each other. There was instant attraction, playfulness and affection. So it was decided. Hope and Niki would adopt Nino and Patricia.
Hope and Niki now live in a beautiful home on ¼ of an acre with trees and a huge yard. They have found the loving forever family that they deserve.
As for Patricia and Nino, well, they just couldn’t be happier. They finally have the two loving dogs they have always wanted to complete their family. They go for walks everyday and to the doggie park when the weather permits. They have equipped their home with all the necessary accoutrements and some not-so-necessary luxuries. Hope and Niki are living in style and comfort.
CWBC wants to extend our congratulations and best wishes and a hearty AROOOOOOOO welcome to Oregon!
Abbie has had a hard life. Multnomah Country Animal Control found her in 2004. She was filthy, hungry and badly in need of medical care. Abbie stayed at the dog pound for a week, frightened and lonely, when it was determined that the County just didn’t have the funds available to repair her badly decaying teeth. Abbie was scheduled for euthanasia.
A kind worker at the Multnomah Country Animal Control saw Abbie’s potential and went to work. She found CWBC Rescue and we were happy to step in. Abbie was given a foster home and she had extensive dental surgery. After a badly needed bath and being nursed back to health, Abbie was up for adoption.
It wasn’t long before a wonderful couple saw Abbie’s picture on the CWBC website and fell in love. They adopted Abbie and she spent 18 months with them in their wonderful, loving home. But then, tragedy struck again. Abbie’s owner fell ill and they could no longer keep her. After long discussions, an agonizing decision was made to return Abbie to CWBC. Abbie was once again homeless.
Enter Ines, Dave, and Star, a wonderful family from Boise, Idaho. They contacted CWBC looking for a “senior” dog as a companion for their beautiful girl, Star. Star is 12-years-old and had knee replacement 3 months prior. She is an active little girl and needed a sister to keep her company and round out their family. You see, these folks had lost their other Beagle to old age and kidney failure.
What luck! They saw Abbie’s picture and were anxious to meet her. They drove all the way from Boise, Idaho. Ines, Dave, and Star met Abbie in a private setting and the girls hit it off right away! Both were happy to share Ines’ and Dave’s attention and to become sisters. They packed Abbie and Star into the car and were off on their long trip back to Boise.
Abbie is now enjoying her “forever family” at last. She is happy to have a new sister, a beautiful yard to play in and the love and attention that Ines and Dave give her. She is also happy to give her love back with her big smile and lots of kisses.
UPDATE: Since her adoption, Abbie has taken up boating and loves to take her new family out on her yacht for a day on Lake Payette. Abbie is a safe boater and would like to remind everyone to wear their life jackets. Happy Sailing!
CWBC would like to thank this family for scouting out a “rescue” Beagle for adoption and wish them all the best in the years to come. A big slurp and paw salute to them!
Bleu
In the picture:
(L to R in Photo: Max, Gabby, John & Louie and Judy & Bleu)
Telling how we first heard about Bleu is easy. A kind hearted neighbor, after seeing him kicked by the family’s children, decided it was time to contact CWBC Beagle Rescue. Bleu lived outside, tied to his doghouse, rarely visited by anyone who owned him. Being taken into rescue was all right by him as his foster parents, Judy & John Eckhart, were wonderful. There was even another Beagle, Louie, as well as Gabby, a Shepherd and Max, a Lab living at this great foster home! All this family became the permanent forever one for Bleu as the Eckhart’s discovered they just couldn’t part with him.
Deciding which story to tell about Bleu’s adventures since being adopted is the hard part! Should it be rolling with Louie in a wonderful dead thing and smelling up the whole yard?
Should it be Judy returning to the dinner table after five seconds, to discover him standing atop the table licking the dinner plates as accomplice, Louie scoured the floor? This little antic backfired as the Eckharts assumed it was Bleu who had devoured the meal’s pork bones & he was quarantined to make sure no bone splinters ruptured his insides. After no food for 24 hours and no sign of any bone fragments, he endured a journey to the vet and a rude temperature check. Once the vet declared him just fine it became apparent to all, it had been his buddy, Louie, who scarfed up the bones as Bleu scattered them to the floor in his leap upon the table! Or should it be how this Houdini dog found the only weak spot in the electric fencing around the property and wormed through it? To return a half day later covered in mud and tired and hungry? Should it be how Bleu will throw himself into Judy’s lap after searching for her in the house and cover her face with ”Good Morning” kisses? Or maybe it should be...
We have been posting Rescue stories since 1997 on our website. In order to update our website, it was necessary to remove many of these stories. We are very happy for the families who found a Beagle/Beagle-mix from our Rescue organization, and we will continue to move forward with our stories. Below is a list of Rescue Beagles up to mid-2005. These are not all the Beagles that have been rescued over time, but those that had success stories posted in the past.
Thank you and Happy Beagling!
