The CWBC Re-Home Program
As printed in the February 2004 newsletter
During the January Club Meeting, the members present discussed, voted and approved a new Re-homing Program for club members who have a Beagle available for adoption. Doug Flatbush opened the topic at the December meeting and agreed to bring more information to the January Meeting.
The purpose for the Re-Home Program is to provide the opportunity for Club members to find a suitable home for:
· Adult dogs who have been returned to a club breeder from a buyer;
· Adult dogs/champions who have been retired from the show ring;
· Adult dogs that, for one reason or another, no longer fit into the breeder’s/owner’s house or kennel.
This program is not for rescue dogs or puppies that need a home, as these dogs fit better in the Rescue or Breeder Referral programs. This is not a fostering program, unless you count the breeder/owner as the foster home, but it is a referral program. The club would not have to find the resources to house these dogs. The CWBC will be providing a valuable service to members and potential new owners through this program, where as much information is shared while promoting responsible ownership. The CWBC will not have ANY responsibility for the health, care and management of the dogs in the program.
John Link shared his views on the program, which are along the same lines as the next few lines. The following words are Doug’s thoughts.
“These dogs are not dogs that are being disposed of. As John said at the meeting, ‘this does not mean we love these dogs any less.’ The breeders who partake in this program will want the best for their dogs. There are many of us who do not have room to take in a dog from a previous litter, or would like to make more room in our household for a puppy (puppies in some cases) from the next litter. And we are not irresponsible enough to allow the pup from our previous litter to be put down because of the owner we sold the pup to didn’t want him or her any more. This program offers a link between these good dogs who need a good home and new owners who would love to have a well bred dog.”
This program will not cost the club a penny, other than a little time from its members. A webpage will be set up on the website with the appropriate legalities stating that the club does not take responsibility for the care, health or welfare of these dogs. Each dog entered into this program will need the following information submitted to get the dog posted on the website:
· A signed Code of Ethics (required to be a club member),
· A sample contact to the Re-Home Coordinator (this will be posted on the website),
· That the dog is healthy and/or under the proper care of a Veterinarian (vaccinations should be discussed with the new owner),
· A disclosure describing specific problems the dog being offered for adoption may have: submissive urination, doesn't like children, not crate trained, occasional lack of house training, chews wrong toys such as the couch, separation anxieties, etc,
· Agreement to take fully responsible for placement of the dog.
This will be further broken down into the following headers on the website: Breed (Should always be a Beagle), Call Name, Registered Name, Sire/Dam, Birth Date, Bio, Current Health, Personality Traits (good and bad), Sample Contract (in PDF format), Contact Information. Additionally, a picture may be submitted, not to be larger than 300x300 pixels. (Doug can help with this!)
